Moving day finally came. Saying goodbye to Dan and Rowan at the airport was hard. We all had tears in our eyes as they told me they loved me very much and to be careful. I promised I would and that Iâd always love them, too. As I turned to walk away, tears streamed down my face. Then I remembered why I was moving and stopped crying. I started thinking about all the new adventures ahead.
When we got to Vegas, Randy took me to lunch and asked what I had planned. I said I wanted to dance at one of the clubs. Randy shook his head in disbelief. âYouâll need to be tough and stand up for yourself, or youâll end up in the gutters. And you wonât survive very long on these streets.â
For a moment, I hesitated, but I wanted to start a new life and I knew in my heart that everything would be okay. I reached for his hand across the table. âThank you for everything youâve done for me,â I said. âYou believed in me when I didnât believe in myself and gave me another chance at life. Iâm truly grateful for your act of kindness. If it werenât for you, Iâd probably still be going down the same destructive path. I could never thank you enough for all youâve done. How can I ever make it up to you?â
Randyâs normally stoic face was heavy with emotion. âI donât want anything from you,â he said. âThe greatest gift would be to know you stayed off drugs. I hope youâll become the strong, happy person you are in Vegas every day.â
He looked down at our hands, still entwined, as he spoke. âYou have a heart of gold, Naomi. I saw the good in you from the beginning. If I hadnât, I wouldnât have kept helping you. Iâve seen drug addicts before and usually, thereâs no hope for them, but I saw your sincerity and determination.â
Randy wiped away his tears and smiled. âIâm glad I was able to help you.â
âI hope one day Iâll be able to do the same for someone else,â I said.
He stood up and hugged me. âPlease take care of yourself, and donât be a stranger.â
âThank you, Randy. Iâll be in touch.â
Lance left work early to pick me up. I was nervous, but as soon as we saw each other it was as if Iâd never left. We got along well, and I could be myself around him. I felt like the luckiest person in Vegas even though I only had two hundred dollars to my name.
We went straight out to explore. Vegas was magical. Everywhere I looked, there were tourists, street performers, girls in sexy outfits trying to get people into the casinos, street hustlers, and people begging for money. Once an hour, there was a light show on Fremont Street. I felt like a kid again.
The next day, I went to work with Lance at Aladdin Timeshare Tours. I was his greeter
